Window Replacement

10 things to consider when replacing windows

December 29, 2016

Replacing the windows in your home is great for energy savings as well as overall better aesthetics. That said, this is not a decision that should be rushed, and homeowners are encouraged to take their time to consider these important points before placing their new window order.

1. New or retro-fit windows

If you have a new construction that requires windows, then new windows are the obvious choice.  The same can be said if your windows are showing significant signs or wear or damage. Retro-fit windows involve the removal and replacement of the window glass. The old frame will remain intact and installed. This option can be cheaper in many cases, but the main reason for choosing this option is to maintain the authentic historical look of your home.

2.Your current windows

If you have windows with metal frames, you may have noticed just how cold they get in the winter. They also tend to absorb and maintain plenty of heat in summer. All the more reason to replace them with new vinyl windows. Wood window frames don’t conduct heat very well, so they’re not poor insulators. They are vulnerable to the elements, however, and any sign of water damage can prove devastating.

3.Know your options

There are a number of window frame options, and they all have their pros and cons. Metal windows, as briefly mentioned above, are poor insulators. This means that they won’t help your energy expenses since they get very cold in the winter and hot in the summer. Wood windows are lovely to look at provided they are properly maintained. They are good insulators, so this is one advantage of this option. Of course, you will need to paint, stain, and maintain the wood on a regular basis or it will suffer water and UV damage. Wood windows also tend to fetch a higher price than many other types of windows. Vinyl windows are poor conductors, and they are not vulnerable to the elements which make them far more durable. With vinyl windows, the frames also have multiple chambers which help keep the cold out in winter and the heat out in summer. What’s even better is that you will not need to worry about maintenance.

4.Choose the glass

There are so many different types of glass options. Each of which has its own benefits and drawbacks. Single glazed windows are just about unheard of these days because they don’t offer much in terms of insulation. Double glazed has become incredibly popular along with triple glazed units. The more layers of glass, the better the insulation. Low-E coatings on the glass help keep UV rays at bay which keeps your home comfortable in summer. Argon gas can be used to fill the spaces between the glass. This colorless, odorless gas is denser than air which means that it takes longer to warm up or cool down. This ups the level of insulation offered by this window.

5.Color and style

Windows are available in various colors, shapes, and sizes. It’s a good to have an idea of what you want. It’s even better to have a professional visit your property to measure, offer advice, and provide you with an estimate. Take note of the style and color scheme of your home before choosing a design and color for your windows.

6.Grilles

Depending on the style of your home and your personal preferences, you can choose whether or not to add grilles. There are a number of colors and designs to choose from which will mean that your windows will look even more unique!

7.Warranties

Your windows are an investment and should be treated as such. It’s important that you ask about their warranty as well as the terms and conditions of this warranty. The warranty may only apply to certain parts of the window whereas other parts (such as working parts) might fall under a different warranty. Make sure that you get everything in writing before you sign.

8.Take your time

Whether you are replacing one window or installing all new windows in your home, it’s important to take the time to think about your options. At the end of the day, you’re the one who has to live with this decision so make sure that it’s the right one for you!

9.Background check

You should always research the window company you’re considering doing business with. It’s not just about checking their website for reviews. You should also look around for reviews on neutral review websites and forums. Of course, not every company can satisfy absolutely every customer, but if they have a relatively great record and a long history as a company, you can trust that they will hold up their end of the bargain.

10.Installation

Window manufacturers are known for their experience and speedy window installations. When you request a quote for new windows, ask about their installation price. Installing just one window yourself can day half a day, at least. These professionals can get the job done and get out of your hair in less than half the time! Not to mention the risk of damage if you attempt the job yourself.
