Bay windows versus Bow windows

April 9, 2016

When you choose new windows for your home, you will need to browse through a variety of size and styles. Two popular options are bow and bay windows. While these two window types are similar to a certain degree, they also display a number of significant differences. The main similarity is that they both add extra space to the room. They can be used to open up a particular living space so that you can add a reading space, additional furniture, or other decorative items. So, how do you choose between these two designs? Well, start by taking note of the following important differences:

Bay windows are easy to identify since they have three sections. They consist of three windows – a main window in the centre with two side windows. These side windows are usually placed at an angle so as to create a rounded appearance. Bow windows, on the other hand, include four or five windows. They are similar to bay windows with additional side windows also placed at an angle for a rounded result.

Bay windows usually include a picture window in the centre with the side windows notably smaller than the main, central window. Bow windows come across as more rounded because they use more windows.

Bay windows are usually used in more modern designs whereas bow windows are chosen to complement homes with a kind of Victorian style. In both cases, it’s important to consider the theme and decorative style before making your choice.

Bow windows allow more light than bay windows because of the extra windows. So, if your room is particularly dark, then bow is the way to go. This will help in terms of natural light which is mentally and financially beneficial since you won’t need to use your lights nearly as much.

It’s also important that you consider just how much space you have to work with. Both windows require the same amount of height space, but bow windows need a wider space. If your room is considerably small and you don’t have the width needed for a bow window, then perhaps a bay window is a more suitable option.

Bow windows are quite understandably more pricy than bay windows. This boils down to the fact that more windows are involved and, therefore, more materials are required. The larger the window, the more it will cost.
