The do’s and don’ts of decorating your windows this festive season

December 1, 2017

When the holidays come around, we unpack all of our decorations and possibly even buy some new ones. Many will agree that the holiday season is pure joy for kids but it’s also fun for many adults too. That rewarding feeling of seeing your home so beautifully decorated is just what so many people need to get into the spirit of things. Both indoor and outdoor decorations are popular today and, when it comes to decorating your windows, it’s important to keep these do’s and don’ts in mind.

Window decorating don’ts:

  • Don’t use nails or screws on vinyl window frames. You might think that this is the best way to hold those lights or other decorations in place but you are essentially making a hole in the frame which is never a good idea. Apart from the physical damage to the window, you will also most likely void the warranty by doing this. The same goes for glue and staples. Instead of sticking the lights to the window itself, try running them around the frame instead.
  • Never place lit candles on the window sill. As pretty as they may look, they can cause damage to the sash and, again, this could void the warranty. If you really love the idea of candles flickering in the window, why not use LED candles instead? There are some excellent ones that even have remote controls and they are available in various colours.
  • Don’t decorate your windows with anything that makes it difficult or impossible to open the window quickly. In the event of an emergency, you might need to escape through the window and you wouldn’t want your decorations to block the way.
  • Don’t use real pine cones or branches on or near your windows. The sap that drips from them is sticky and can leave some nasty stains once all is said and done. You might not invalidate your warranty but you will never enjoy those perfectly clean window frames again. Use artificial pine instead.

Window decorating do’s:

  • Use suction cups to hold various items that you want to stick to your windows.
  • If you want to hang a wreath over the window, you can use a suction cup at the top of the window with some fishing line to hang the wreath.
  • If you need to drill a hole or secure a nail, make sure that you secure the screw or nail to the siding. Leave enough space so that you don’t accidentally damage the sash or window frame.
  • Place your Christmas tree in your bow or bay window. Not only will this free up some space in your living room, but you will also give this window its very own special attraction and you won’t need to decorate the window with any other lights or decorative items.
  • Put your curtain rods to good use by hanging ornaments from them. You can remove the curtains or leave them on – depending on your personal preferences.
  • If you choose to decorate your windows with festive stickers, make sure that they are the removable kind. You don’t want to have to scrape them off since this will damage the window itself.
  • If you want to use decorative snow on your windows, make sure that you are ready for a bit of a challenging clean up. Artificial snow is soft when it’s applied but, after a few hours or days, it becomes hard and it can be quite difficult to remove. You will need to use the right cleaning solutions and avoid scraping.

Remember to always clean your windows just before you put up any decorations. You might not be able to wash your windows until the holidays are over which is all the more reason to make sure that they are in top shape! If you have any old or damaged windows, make sure that they are replaced sooner or later. Not only for aesthetic reasons but also security and energy efficiency.
