Yellow Front Door

How to choose the right colour front door

January 20, 2016

When choosing a new front door for your home, you will need to consider several options in terms of materials, style, size, design, and colour. The type of material you choose will depend on personal preferences and needs. The style, size, and design will depend on the amount of space you have available as well as the overall design of your home. As for colour, you will need to consider the style of your home, current colour scheme, possibly changing the main colour scheme, and personal preferences.

Home style
Take note of the theme of your home’s design before choosing a front door colour. The colours used on a Victorian home will be very different to those used on a modern home or any other style.

Use a colour wheel
If you find yourself a little bit lost when it comes to colour combinations, you can always use a colour wheel to help identify different colour schemes. Colour wheels make it easier to visualise the different options. Sometimes combinations that seem unlikely matches look incredible side by side.

Impact the mood
The colour and shade that you choose will dictate the mood since your front door is usually the main focal point of your home’s exterior. Darker colours can help create a more traditional appearance while brighter colours have more of an energetic feel. Consider the mood you want your guests to experience as they enter your home when choosing a colour.

Different colours
Here are some main colour selection ideas:
• Yellow is a wonderfully cheerful colour for those who want to brighten the exterior of your home and create an energetic, warm, and happy mood.
• Red is great for making a strong statement. It is associated with strength, power, and passion. A darker, deeper red is great for an even more sophisticated look.
• Orange is a tricky one but, if you pair it with the right coloured walls and exterior flooring (like stones), you can enjoy a superb modern design. Orange is best used in small quantities.
• Green comes in many shades from lime to mint and olive. The shade you choose will depend on your home as well as your natural surroundings.
• Blue doors aren’t as popular as some other colours but they can look fabulous when paired with a natural exterior design.
• Purple, like orange, should be used sparingly. It can be used to compliment a variety of colour palettes but should be used more as an accent or accessory rather than a main colour.
• Black is a wonderful and easy colour to work with. It looks lovely with so many different colours. Just make sure that you add some black to other parts of the exterior design to compliment your black front door.
• Brown is another option of course and wooden doors (or those with a wood-like finish) look lovely without changing the colour.
• White doors are also popular for some homes. However, it’s important to note that the lighter the door, the faster it will show dirt and wear and tear. This is why so many people choose darker shades.
