Maintaning a Wood Entry Door

How to maintain your wooden entry door

July 21, 2015

There is no substitute for the unique luxury of a wooden front door. Not only is this type of door great in terms of energy efficiency, but it also gives your home a superb touch of class. Of course, many homeowners already know that wood doors will require a certain amount of maintenance. When choosing wood, it is important to understand how to protect your door from various elements.

How Damage Occurs

There are a number of ways in which your door can become damaged, and these are not always preventable. They are, however, treatable if you follow the right guidelines.

Sunlight: The sun is something you cannot really avoid, and its UV rays don’t only harm our skin but also other surfaces like wood. The sun can cause the shade of the wood to fade.

Wind: Wind itself might seem harmless, but it’s the dust and dirt it carries that can damage wooden doors. As dirt strikes the door, it causes slight damage that you might not notice at first. Over time, the door becomes more damaged, and the dirt also tends to pack on and stick to the door.

Moisture: Probably one of the most dangerous of all is moisture since it has a way of getting into all the places it doesn’t belong. Rain, snow and other forms of precipitation can all cause the wood to swell and warp.

Non-environmental damage: Obviously, your front door can become damaged if you bump it with something like an item of furniture or if you have an energetic or mischievous pet.

What to Look For

When inspecting your wood entry door for damage, there are several signs to look for. Firstly, make sure that the door opens and closes properly. When shut, the door should prevent airflow between the interior and exterior. If you notice cold air seeping in during the winter, for example, then you will need to determine the source of the problem.

Regularly inspect the finish and check for everything from discolouration and light scratches to peeling paint and large cracks. Don’t just look at the door – feel it! If it is rough to the touch, you will need to tend to the finish. If you notice dark streaks in the wood (beneath the clear finish) or you notice that the finish is taking on a whiter appearance, your door might be suffering from water damage. This is largely due to the finish becoming less resistant.

How to Perform Repairs

If the exterior of the door is the only part that is damaged, then it might be the only area in need of attention. Remember that removing your door from its frame will make it that much easier to work on.

Painted doors with minor scratches and chips can be touched-up rather than redoing the entire job. It depends on how extensive the damage proves to be.

More extensive damage could mean that all sides of the door will need to be stripped, sanded and prepped before a new finish can be applied. Remember to always sand with the grain for best results.

After sanding, get rid of any residue by wiping the door down with a clean cloth that has been lightly moistened with mineral spirits. The door should then be allowed to dry completely before you apply the primer. Once the primer is dry, a suitable paint can be applied.

Remember that darker colours absorb heat, and they don’t usually hold up quite as well as lighter shades. You can also ask about products with UV inhibitors to help add even more protection.

Installing a storm door will also add an extra layer of protection to the exterior of your front door. Regardless of the type of front door you install, storm doors are always beneficial.
