Do I need to replace all of my windows?

August 12, 2016

Whether you have a new home, or you have enjoyed the same home for years, there comes a time when at least one window will need replacing. Windows are vital fixtures of any home and, as such, they need to be properly maintained and replaced when necessary. Once you notice the need for this change, a common question homeowners have is whether they need to replace all of their windows or just one or two.

For those who are on a strict budget, you might not want to overextend yourself. So, if you notice that one or two windows urgently needs to be replaced, then it should be done immediately rather than waiting. Broken or severely worn out windows can leak and they can pose a safety risk. Water infiltration can cause serious damage to the walls of your home, and if the old frames are made from wood, then they could even become loose if the surrounding walls swell due to water infiltration. All the more reason to address such problems with a sense of urgency. In these cases, you should look for the best window to match the rest of the windows in your home. The replacement window should fit into the area provided in order to maintain continuity.

If most of the windows in your home are relatively new, then there’s no need to go to the trouble and expense of replacing all of them. If they are still performing without problems, then there’s simply no need to change them. Of course, if all of the windows are old, single pane, or have wood frames, you might want to consider a complete make-over. If you have a multilevel home, and you don’t have the funds to replace all of the windows at once, you could focus on one level at a time. Another alternative is to replace all the windows along the front of the house and to replace the back windows at another stage. If you are planning on selling your property in the near or distant future, it’s always a good idea to have quality windows. So don’t settle for second best!

Retrofit windows are another option. You will need to maintain the existing frames and order windows to fit. Of course, this means that your frames must be in perfect condition and that the problems are located within the window itself. When ordering retrofitted windows, it’s essential that you get the measurements just right! This is why it’s so important to get a professional in to have a look around and make the proper assessments based on your home, needs, and budget.
