Tips for deciding where to fit a new window

July 14, 2015

Whether you are building a new home from scratch or performing some renovations, there are a number of things to consider. Not only do you need to plan the size of the home or room, but you also need to anticipate where you would like to fit such fixtures as windows and doors. While your doors will allow access, windows allow light and air which makes it that much more important to plan properly. You might like to fit large windows or smaller ones. If you are installing patio doors, you might not need as many windows since the doors will also allow natural light and air to flow through the room. Here are some of the main considerations to keep in mind when planning where to install windows in your home:

Interior Design

If you plan on installing a window in your living room, for example, you wouldn’t want to fit one in the wall behind your TV. Think about where you plan on placing all of your furniture while designing your room. Consider the flow of the room as well as where you plan on placing your furniture. Remember that, while one large window might not be suitable, you could successfully incorporate multiple small windows instead.

How About the View?

Take a stroll around and look at the view that you’re in for. Remember that the view from your window can affect the appearance of any room in your home. For example, if you have a pleasant view of your pool or garden, it will bode well for that room. If, on the other hand, your view is more of an eyesore, then you will be tempted to keep your curtains drawn at least most of the time. If you are able to enjoy the sunset or sunrise from a particular room, make sure that you fit your window(s) facing the right direction.

Welcome the Light

Natural light is a great way of boosting your mood and keeping your bills as low as possible. Instead of having to keep your lights on during the day, you can make the most of natural light. Natural light is easier on the eyes and can help improve your mood. When installing windows, you need to place them on the appropriate side of the house while considering any nearby trees or other structures that might block the sun.

Exterior Appeal

Windows don’t just look great from the inside, but they also add that special touch to the outside of your home. Windows need to be in line with one another even if they are in different rooms. For example, you should not have one window at a particular height in your bedroom, and your nearby living room windows are on a different level. Even if they are different types of windows in different rooms, they need to be lined up appropriately, and this is where a professional’s eye will come in particularly handy.

Eventual Buyers

Whenever you perform any kind of work on your home, it’s important to remember that you might wish to sell your home at some stage. For this reason, it’s always a good idea to keep a buyer’s perspective in mind. Make sure that your windows and other fixtures appeal to them.

Additional Features

Windows can offer even more than you might imagine. Just think about installing a window seat in your favorite part of your home. This is a great place to relax, read a book, and it also acts as a wonderful selling point.
