Prepare Your Home for Winter

Essential tips to prepare your home for winter

December 1, 2016

During the winter, every household can expect higher energy bills. Of course, like many other aspects of life, it has become increasingly important to keep costs as low as possible. When heating your home in winter, it’s important to understand that every home has its strengths and weaknesses. Regular household inspections make early detection of various problems possible. By detecting these problems in time, you can make the necessary repairs before temperatures reach their lowest. When inspecting your home, here’s what you need to look for:

Take the time to inspect your roof thoroughly while you can. Once snow season sets in, it will be impossible to perform any exterior checks. If you notice any cracked tiles, they should be replaced immediately. If you have chimney pots but they are not in use, you can protect them with ventilated cowls.

Drains and gutters

When autumn leaves start to fall, it can make things difficult for your gutters. By using the proper inserts, you can prevent leaves from blocking your drainpipes, but you cannot completely protect your gutters or drains. Regular cleaning is essential since any overflowing water can cause serious damage to your walls and other parts of your home.

When it comes to heat loss, your walls can either be your best friend or an absolute nightmare. Like your roof, walls can also be insulated to reduce heat loss. The advantage of investing in proper insulation for winter is that you can enjoy the benefits in summer too. During the winter, your home will stay warmer and, in summer, insulated walls will keep the heat out. Make sure that water cannot pool or gather on any of your exterior walls or sills. Any exterior window sills should be angled to allow water to run off.

Your windows can also help keep energy costs low if the are in good condition. Windows that are broken, warped, or otherwise worn out will allow cold air to enter your home and this will obviously force you to spend more on heating. As briefly mentioned above, you should make sure that all of your window sills allow water to flow away from the window. If water gathers on the window sill and freezes, it can have several devastating consequences. If you do not already have double glazed windows, there has never been a better time to make this investment. If you want extra insulating power, ask for triple glazed glass. Check around the frame of your window and all areas where the window meets the frame. If you notice any air or water infiltration, you might need to replace the glass or the entire window. During the winter, you might also like to fit curtains in order to keep your home that much warmer. Remember, the type of windows you choose will determine their energy efficiency. For example, vinyl windows are far more energy efficient than aluminum windows.

Like windows, your doors are no good if they can’t keep air and water out. Even the smallest gap or leak can make your home noticeably cooler in winter. Check your exterior doors and make sure that they close properly. Make sure that you inspect the weather stripping too, while you’re at it. You might need to replace the weather stripping every few years, but it’s definitely worth it! If your door is warped or significantly damaged, it would be ideal to replace it as soon as possible.

Heating system and Chimney

Check any and all heating systems throughout your home before winter arrives. This means that you should have your chimney swept and test any other heating systems you have. Even if your fireplace is only a backup source of heat, it’s best to be prepared and never leave anything to chance.
