How do vinyl windows compare to wood windows?

June 29, 2016

When the time comes to replace your home’s windows, it’s quite common to contemplate the pros and cons of wood versus vinyl. Wood frames have proven popular in the past, but vinyl caught up fast and is now excelling in this industry. So, before you make your final decision, here are some things to consider:

Materials

Vinyl windows are known for their durability since they are made from a high-quality PVC with some other elements of reinforcement in the sash. Wood frames often remain as they are on the interior but are often covered with some kind of coating on the exterior. Without this coating, the wood is completely vulnerable to the elements.

Colors

Vinyl is often white, but you can order it in several colors these days, so there’s more variety than ever before. Wood can be left in its natural state, stained, or even painted – depending on your personal preferences. Regular treatment and repainting will be needed in order to maintain the desired look.

Maintenance

Vinyl windows require no maintenance apart from cleaning and possibly maintenance of the working/moving parts (which applies to any window regardless of the type of frame). Wood needs to be protected and sealed on a regular basis. Before applying a new layer of paint or varnish, the old layer needs to be removed. This takes time, effort, and money of course.

Insulation

Wood offers great insulation because it does not conduct heat or cold – unlike metal frames. Vinyl, is also a poor conductor and, to increase the level of insulation, the frames are hollow. This means that, even if the frame on the exterior becomes really cold, the air in the middle of the frame will need to cool down to the temperatures outside before it can affect the temperature of the interior part of the frame. At the same time, your heat source is keeping your home warm, so the interior frame helps prevent the air inside the frame from cooling down too much.

Prices

Since prices vary from vendor to vendor, it’s best to estimate that vinyl retails for about 25% less than wood. This is largely due to the fact that vinyl is manufactured quicker than wood can be processed and there seems to be a steadier supply of vinyl. Some say it’s the price of beauty while others agree that vinyl is cheaper from start to finish and offers more than enough benefits to earn its keep.

Aesthetic appeal

Wood is arguably more attractive when compared to many vinyl designs. Wood has a more natural aspect that vinyl lacks but, if you have a modern home, or you are leaning towards a more modern approach, then vinyl will suit your home just fine. In fact, it’s the understated style of vinyl windows that helps them blend in rather than stand out. It’s also good to note that grilles can be added to your windows in order to give them the edge over the competition.

Availability

As briefly mentioned previously, vinyl windows can be made at a faster rate than wood frames. This means that they can be made to order in a very short period of time, and the standard sizes in the industry are available off the shelf. Wood, on the other hand, takes time to process and treat before it can be sold.

Resale

When fitting new windows, it’s important to think about the long-term impact of your decisions. Wood can offer great returns provided it’s kept in perfect shape. If the wood is in any way damaged by rain or a kind of infestation, they won’t be attractive at all to potential buyers. If the wooden frames are not properly maintained, they will lose their appeal and buyers might see it as too expensive or too much of an inconvenience to get them back into shape. Vinyl, on the other hand, will look great with little to no maintenance and you won’t need to worry about losing money with this kind of investment.
