Windows and Doors Frequently Asked Questions

Why are vinyl windows the best choice?
Your choice of framing material goes a long way toward determining the longevity and energy of the total window system. Wood windows possess excellent thermal qualities but are prone to weather deterioration and require painting at regular intervals. Aluminum windows are very durable but offer little insulating value because they conduct energy rapidly. Vinyl windows are your best choice because they offer thermal characteristics similar to wood are extremely durable and provide a finish that is virtually maintenance -free. Also keep in mind that the best performing vinyl window systems have multi-chambered frames with welded corners.

What is R-Value and why is it important?

R-Value is a measure of the thermal resistance of an object. The higher the R-value number of a material, the better its insulating properties and the slower the heat flows through it either from a warm, heated space to cold outside temperatures of from a hot exterior to a cool, air conditioned space. It is used to compare the insulating values of differing products, like insulation or windows. It is important in choosing a replacement window because the higher the R-Value the less thermal transfer will occur.

What is Low-E glass and what are its benefits?

Low-E glass stands for low emissivity glass. It is a technologically advanced, insulating glass that improves energy efficiency by reducing the transfer of heat or cold through windows.

ALMA Windows and Doors uses Cardinal’s LoE3 which adds a third coating for the ultimate in performance and clarity – it reduces window heat gain by 64% compared to ordinary glass. LoE3 also provides exceptional fading protection, blocking out 95% of damaging UV rays.

During cold weather the insulating effect of your windows directly impacts the air temperature in your rooms. The superior insulating capability of LoE3 glass keeps your home warm and controls humidity.

The benefits for our customers include:

  • Energy and cost savings
  • Decreased condensation
  • Year round comfort
  • More sunlight
  • Improved clarity
  • Prevention of damaging UV rays

What is Argon gas and why is it used with Low-E glass?

Argon is a safe odorless, colorless, non-toxic, non-flammable insert that is commonly used in place of air between the glass panes of an insulated Low E glass unit. Argon’s heat conductivity is lower than that of air. And thus it is better insulator and contributes to a lower U-factor. Argon is not an effective solar performer by itself: that is why it is only used on conjunction with Low E insulated glass.

What are ENERGY STAR windows?

ENERGY STAR is a government-backed program helping businesses and individuals protect the environment through superior energy efficiency. ENERGY STAR-qualified vinyl windows and doors save you energy and money, increase the comfort of your home, and protect your valuable possessions from sun damage. They are also better for the environment because lowering your energy use means less air pollution from power plants. Save money and energy. Installing Energy Star qualified windows from GTA Windows and Doors lowers energy bills and saves you money over new double-paned, clear glass vinyl windows and vinyl patio doors…More info about Energy Savings

What’s the difference between complete tear out and retrofit Installation?

Complete Tear Out
refers to removing everything down to the studs starting from scratch.
Benefit: The better method of installation and maintain viewing area.
Tradeoff: more product, more materials, more labour and larger investment.

Retrofit
refers to removal of operating sashes, inserting a window into existing window frames.
Benefit: Lower cost and less mess during installation.
Tradeoff: Any air filtration behind an old frame con not be eliminated. Remember you are putting a window inside a window so you also loose viewing area.

Why should I buy custom replacement windows?

Custom replacement windows give you the perfect fit. Stock windows are available only in standard sizes. When your window opening is larger than a standard size, you’re left with an opening around the perimeter of the window. This opening is often filled with sheet rock or molding and you are left with extra all space to patch and paint. Custom replacement windows allow you to maximize your viewing area without jeopardizing the visual aesthetics of your home.

Will replacing my old windows really cut down on my heating bills?

Yes! Windows are one of the most important aspects of regulating home temperatures. Most windows in older homes were designed when energy was cheap and new energy efficient materials were unknown. Today’s newer energy efficient windows are designed with overall thermal efficiency in mind; keeping the heat in and the cold out. Typically, an older home can lose up to 50 percent of its energy heat through leaky, drafty windows and doors.
